I made yogurt! Seriously. I made it. From scratch! In my crockpot! This is crazy cool. And soooooo easy!
- Take a half-gallon of organic whole milk, not super-pasteurized, but pasteurized will work just fine. Pour it into the crockpot and heat on the LOW setting for 2.5 hours.
- Turn off the crockpot but leave it covered on the counter for 3 hours.
- Take 1/2 cup yogurt (store bought with active live cultures or 1/2 cup from your previous batch) and stir it into the warm milk in the crockpot.
- Wrap the crockpot in a heavy bath towel over night and wait. In the morning . . . yogurt!
You can strain the yogurt through a cloth lined sieve to drain off the whey for a thicker consistency like Greek yogurt. Flavor with honey or fruit. Yummy!! Enjoy!

I do this a lot and it’s one of the things that got me through the first month of my frugality! Great to have you along on the yogurt bandwagon!
[...] not even compare to the yogurt from that beach stand. I’m hoping this recipe, made with my homemade yogurt, will give me something close to the yogurt of my dreams . . [...]
Hi, Ashley! I found your blog through southern mamas. You mentioned you were part of the Sav.coop so i thought, “Oooh, this might be a good place to get some recipes for all this coop food!” I recoginze your yogurt directions from the crockpot blog–I actually posted an almost identical post about my yogurt finds. But the excitement has worn off, as I can’t seem to get it right a second time. . . and a third. . . so much wasted sweetgrass dairy milk! I just wondered if you were still having luck with this recipe? I can’t figure out what I do right one day and wrong the next!
Hi Sarah! I hate to admit it but I haven’t had time to try the recipe a second time yet. I was planning to make another batch this week. What sorts of problems have you run into?
Mostly, it doesnt set up enough. I know homemade yogurt is not supposed to have that thick consistency of storebought, but this is way way runny. Even trying to strain it didn’t work this time. I’ve also tried different fat contents of milk and tried adding powdered milk. My guess is the problem is with the temperature. I’m going to try my crockpot one more time and then i might just have to spring for a yogurt maker. Our family loves yogurt. GOOD LUCK! I’d love to hear how it turns out!
